Child and Carer Visas
Australia provides several visa options to support children and family members who require care. Below is an overview of the main pathways available.
Child Visa (Subclass 101 & 802)
The Child visa allows an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to sponsor their biological or adopted child to live, work, and study in Australia.
- Subclass 101: Apply from outside Australia
- Subclass 802: Apply from inside Australia
Eligibility
- The child must be:
- Subclass 802: Apply from inside Australia
- Under 18 years of age, or
- A full time student aged 18–25, or
- Over 18 and unable to work due to disability
- The child must be single and financially dependent on the parent
Dependent Child Visa (Subclass 445)
This temporary visa allows a child to remain in Australia while their parent’s permanent Partner visa application is being processed.
Eligibility
- The child must be dependent on a parent who holds a Partner (Provisional) visa (subclass 309), Partner visa (subclass 820), or Dependent Child visa (subclass 445)
- Must be sponsored by the same nominator or sponsor as the parent
- The child must be:
- Under 18 years of age, or
- Over 18 but financially dependent on the parent
- Must meet health requirements and have consent from all legal guardians in their home country
Carer Visa (Subclass 116 & 836)
The Carer visa is a permanent visa that allows you to move to Australia to provide ongoing care for an Australian relative or a member of their family who lives with them.
- Subclass 116: Apply from outside Australia
- Subclass 836: Apply from inside Australia (bridging visa granted while awaiting a decision)
Key requirements
- The Australian relative must have no reasonable access to care options in Australia
- You must be able to provide substantial, ongoing care and support
- A medical certificate from Bupa Medical Visa Services must confirm the relative’s medical condition and care needs
- The Australian relative or their partner must sponsor you for the first two years in Australia
