Permanent residency in Australia is granted with an indefinite right to stay, but it comes with a five year travel facility. This means that while you can remain in Australia indefinitely, you must hold a valid visa to re enter the country if you travel overseas.
If your travel facility has expired and you are outside Australia, you will not be able to return as a permanent resident without a valid visa. The Resident Return visa (subclasses 155 and 157) allows you to re enter Australia and resume your permanent residency status
