Family and partner visas
Australia offers several visa options for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. Each pathway has different requirements, processing times, and benefits.
Parent Visa Subclass 103
A permanent visa that allows parents of settled Australians to move to Australia
- Can only be granted while the applicant is outside Australia
- Applications are subject to capping and queuing, with processing times of 25–30 years
- Not available if you have applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870)
Aged Parent Visa Subclass 804
A permanent visa for aged parents (currently defined as 67 years or older) of settled Australians.
- Must apply while in Australia
- Eligible for a bridging visa to remain in Australia while the application is processed
- Not available if you have applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870)
Contributory Parent Visa Program
As of July 2025, a new 143 visa application may take 14 years or more to process.
Processing times are subject to change for several reasons, such as:
- The volume of applications submitted
- Changes in planned levels
- Administrative Review Tribunal outcomes, and
- Ministerial Intervention
143 visas are also subject to capping, meaning a maximum number of visas can be granted in a migration program year. Applicants may apply directly for permanent residency or begin with a temporary contributory visa before transitioning to permanent status.
Visa options include
- Subclass 173 (Temporary): Valid for 2 years; applicant can be in or outside Australia when applying
- Subclass 143 (Permanent): Applicant can be in or outside Australia when applying
- Subclass 143 (Permanent): Applicant can be in or outside Australia when applying
- Subclass 864 (Contributory Aged Parent Permanent): For applicants aged 67+; must apply in Australia; bridging visa available
Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa - Subclass 870
A temporary visa that allows parents to visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years.
Key requirements for sponsors
- Minimum taxable income of AUD 83,454.80 (can be combined with up to two other eligible individuals)

- Must meet sponsorship obligations and provide police clearances
Visa applicant requirements
- Must be sponsored by an approved parent sponsor
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must provide evidence of funds, health insurance, and meet health and character requirements
Visa costs
- AUD 6,070.00 for up to 3 years
- AUD 12,140.00 for up to 5 years
